For all the reasons you do (and don’t) want to wear a mask this December, there is another way to think about masks that changes the way you celebrate Christmas in 2020.

You want to be informed, but the information is overwhelming.

Sure, there’s good news, but only after you scroll past or listen through the onslaught of pandemics, protests and politics.

So you’re left with a few choices when you have news fatigue–you could avoid the news altogether, but that comes at the expense of ignorance. You could cherry-pick where you get your news, but that comes at the risk of misinformation. You could keep logging onto or turning on the news, but that comes at the high price of personal well-being.

Fortunately, there’s another choice when you feel information overload and news fatigue, and it’s a lesson we find when Jesus was fighting news fatigue.

What have you lost because of COVID-19?

It might be your loved ones. Or your job. Or your sense of normalcy. Whatever it is, there’s a word for the emotion you feel because of that loss:

Grief.

Seeing it as such is only the first step. The next step is deciding what you’ll do with your grief.

It’s not up to you whether something happened to you. And it’s not up to you what emotion you feel because of what happened to you. But it is up to you what you do with your grief. And yes, your grief will find expression.

Bottling up your grief leads to health problems ranging from digestive issues to heart problems. Taking out your grief on the people around you leads to relational problems. Pretending your grief doesn’t matter can lead to all sorts of mental health issues.

This is why Jesus speaks very directly about what he wants you to do with what you feel, and why I made a video on what Jesus says about your grief.

I hope you’re blessed by it.

anytime we experience loss it doesn’t
just have to be the death of a loved one
it might be the loss of a relationship
or the loss of health or the loss of
normalcy or the loss of a job the
emotions that we feel because of the
loss we’ve experienced that’s called
grief and Jesus has some very specific
things that he wants you to do with your
grief let’s talk about it everybody my
name is crisp Avila and welcome to what
Jesus says about where Jesus speaks for
himself so you can respond for yourself
and don’t forget to hit like and
subscribe so you can stay up to date on
what Jesus says about topics important
to you topics like what Jesus says about
grief now you might imagine Christians
and followers of Jesus as people who are
happy all the time and when bad things
happen they just bury their head in the
sand because after all if you’re not
happy then you’re not very holy but when
you look at what Jesus says about grief
you see that that’s not the picture like
at all in fact there’s this one time
where Jesus is talking to a crowd of
people and he tells them a series of
perplexing contrasting kind of
statements and right in the middle of it
he says blessed are those who mourn for
they will be comforted now if you’re
hearing that and you’re going wait what
that doesn’t make sense and then you’re
not alone because everyone in that crowd
had kind of the same reaction going away
Jesus what do you mean blessed are those
who mourn especially when you consider
that the word blessed that he uses could
also be translated as happy so literally
he’s saying happy are the sad I know
right but that’s where the second half
of Jesus’s statement becomes important
because he says happy are the sad for
they will be comforted and this might
sound wishy-washy to you but actually
modern psychology kind of agrees with
Jesus here we know today that if you
suppress or repress your grief you’ll
let it out in unhealthy ways if you
don’t let it out you’ll act it out and
grief isn’t just something you
experience with the death of a loved one
grief can be something you experience
because of a loss of a job or loss of
help or loss of a relationship or the
loss of normalcy and when we stop
playing the tough-guy Act keeping a
stiff upper lip and don’t bother anyone
and we start more
and expressing our grief that’s where we
start to find healing and hope or in the
words of Jesus comforts so how do we do
this well the first thing you can do is
to have a conversation with somebody who
loves you and tell them how you’re
feeling and in that conversation you’ll
start to excavate the emotions you’re
feeling and be able to name them but to
really live out what Jesus says about
grief that’s a conversation he wants you
to have with God so you might just start
with dear God I am grieving the loss of
dot dot dot and then you fill in the
blank yourself it might be dear God I’m
grieving the loss of my spouse or dear
God I am grieving a loss of my health or
my income whatever it might be for you
just tell him and a happier blessed
version of you is waiting on the other
side now Jesus says a whole lot about a
whole lot that’s why I’d be honored if
you would hit like and subscribe so you
can stay up-to-date on what Jesus says
about topics important to you
also I’ve got some other videos that
will maybe help you in your time of
grief that you can check out right here
thanks so much and we’ll see you soon

Chances are, you’ve never tried to do what Jesus says to do about worry.

Worry doesn’t just steal our happiness. Like falling dominoes, worry robs our health, our diet, our blood pressure, our relationships, and more.

So it shouldn’t surprise us that Jesus, who says he came to GIVE us a full life, would like to stop worry and anxiety from robbing us of that life.

But his teaching is so subtle, so fast, it’s rarely practiced. Let’s see what happens when you give it a try.

where Jesus wants to teach you about
worry only takes about a minute hey my
name is Chris Paulo and welcome to what
Jesus says about where Jesus speaks for
himself so you can respond for yourself
and don’t forget to hit like and
subscribe so you can stay up to date on
what Jesus says about topics important
to you topics like what Jesus says about
worry and I don’t know what’s causing
you to worry right now maybe it’s a loss
of something or to fear something that
you feel threatened whatever it is
there’s this one time where Jesus is
teaching a particularly anxious group of
people and he tells them do not worry
look at the birds they neither sow or
reap or store in barns and yet your
heavenly Father feeds them and on the
surface we’re like okay that’s nice
Jesus look at the birds okay what else
you got but this is actually one of
those teachings that I think people know
but actually don’t practice because in
one of the biographies of Jesus written
by a man named Luke the word for look
that he uses there is consider or wave
or gaze upon until something is
discovered weird that you and I would
use for that as meditate so here’s what
I’d like to do right now I’d actually
like to practice this teaching of Jesus
and so whatever you’re feeling right now
whatever you’re doing right now let’s
just press pause on all of it and we’re
gonna put up a live cam of birds right
now who are doing their bird thing and
and we’re gonna see what we discover
when we do what Jesus suggests and
consider the birds it’s just one minute
you can do this you ready here we go
[Music]
yes so what did you discover for me
personally there is something about
their carefree nature and there’s
something about like just the way they
went about their business but but now
that we’ve considered the birds
Jesus has three follow-up questions that
he asks ready so the first question he
asks is kind of rhetorical he says are
you not more valuable than the birds and
he’s not saying the birds aren’t
valuable he’s just saying that on the
sliding scale of life there’s birds but
you are more valuable than birds to your
heavenly Father and then the second
question he asks is can any of you by
worrying add a single hour to your life
worry subtracts our energy it subtracts
our attention it subtracts from our
happiness you get exercise to extend
your life you can eat healthy to extend
your life but worry will not extend your
life and then we get to our third
question and this one’s not rhetorical
this one’s actually for reflection and
he says since you cannot do this very
little thing why do you worry about the
rest and here Jesus is being kind of
blunt he’s bringing us to a recognition
of what we can and can’t control and
when we’re faced with that uncertainty
of what we can’t control we have two
choices either worry or trust and so I’d
love to hear your answer in your
comments below why do you worry about
the rest gonna take a little bit of
honesty but I really I think we’ll all
benefit from this discussion so I look
forward to hearing what you have to say
we’ll see you soon

Somehow, it’s fitting that we’re spending Easter indoors.

Social isolation and social distancing during the Coronavirus has changed the way we live. Businesses, schools and even churches have turned online because of COVID-19 stay-at-home orders and quarantine efforts.

But when we celebrate Easter at home, we suddenly have a new perspective to consider the importance of the resurrection of Jesus.

Jesus takes on the Coronavirus!

Our lives are dominated by COVID-19 right now. We might venture out to buy groceries and paper towels, but for most of the day we’re quarantined in our homes with hand sanitizer, watching the news and waiting for a vaccine. This is the new normal for the foreseeable future, and probably further.

But while we practice self-isolation and social distancing to ride out this pandemic, you and I can actually use this new experience (for us) to consider the significance and impact of Jesus like never before.

with everything going on with the
coronavirus and covet 19 what does Jesus
say about disease and why would it
matter we should talk about it hey my
name is Chris Pavle and welcome to what
Jesus says about where Jesus speaks for
himself so you can respond for yourself
and don’t forget to hit subscribe so you
can stay up to date on what Jesus says
about topics important to you topics
like what Jesus says about disease and
when it comes to disease Jesus’s actions
speak louder than his words and it’s a
message that we usually miss in the 21st
century until we encounter a disease
that causes so much concern a disease
like the corona virus now in the ancient
world if you had an infectious disease
you were declared unclean or you were
called untouchable and if you had an
infectious disease like let’s say
leprosy and you saw someone coming near
you you had to shout out at the top of
your lungs unclean unclean so they could
avoid contamination from you and you’re
untouchable disease and so if you had an
infectious disease you would have to
leave the community and quarantine
yourself in the wilderness and intense
isolation and social distancing so you
wouldn’t contaminate anyone else sound
familiar
enter Jesus and what makes him so
remarkable to the first century audience
and what we usually miss when we read
about him is that he was unafraid of
disease and in the biographies of Jesus
you read over and over how he would heal
people who had deadly infectious
diseases and and when he would heal them
that wasn’t with a wave of his hand or a
magic word when Jesus would heal people
he would touch them he would touch the
untouchable and not with like rubber
gloves and hand sanitizer and a mask on
now you would just reach out in
compassion and skin-to-skin touch them
and once you wish follow her name’s
Matthew is watching all of this and he
starts to think back to the words of a
prophet named Isaiah there was written
hundreds of years before Jesus and he
described what the Messiah would do and
so in his biography of Jesus Matthew
makes sure to mention this when he
writes
jesus healed all the sick to fulfill
what was spoken through the prophet
Isaiah he took on our sickness and
carried our diseases
this means that Matthew discovered
something about Jesus because of the
sickness he realized that the promised
Messiah wouldn’t just come to heal our
disease was more than that he would
enter into our suffering and touch our
untouchable disease so why does any of
this matter right now well just like
Matthew I believe that you and I can
transform this into an experience where
we can discover something about Jesus
the easiest way to do this is to use
this new perspective we have because of
our social distancing and our self
isolation and pick up one of the
biographies of Jesus Matthew Mark Luke
John and as you read you’ll be able to
examine Jesus with with a new
understanding and a new appreciation of
of just how valuable it is that Jesus
didn’t just come to heal us that he was
unafraid to give us the very thing that
you and I want more than anything else
in this season of self isolation and
social distancing presence

Join us for our next large group gathering: Sunday, July 27th at 10AM
